Chhattisgarh to Roll Out ‘Gaudham Yojana’ for Stray Cattle Protection

Gaudham Yojana for Stray cattle

The Chhattisgarh government is gearing up to launch the Gaudham Yojana, a new initiative aimed at safeguarding stray cattle, improving livestock breeds, and generating rural employment through organic farming, fodder development, and cow-based industries.

The scheme, cleared by both the Finance and Livestock Development Departments, is expected to give a fresh push to cattle welfare and rural livelihoods.

What is the Gaudham Yojana?

The Gaudham Yojana is designed to ensure proper care of abandoned and stray cattle while also creating regular income opportunities for cowherds (charwaha) and cattle attendants (sevak).

Key features include:

  • Building Gaudhams (cattle shelters) exclusively on government land
  • Providing secure fencing, sheds, water supply, and electricity
  • Cultivating fodder on adjoining pastureland
  • Utilising existing infrastructure from the earlier Gauthan Yojana

Payments and Benefits

Under the scheme, both workers and Gaudham operators will receive fixed payments.

BeneficiaryMonthly HonorariumAdditional Allowance

Cattle Attendant (Sevak)₹13,126Daily fodder allowance

Extra Incentives for Outstanding Gaudhams:

  • Year 2: ₹20 per animal per day

Who Can Operate a Gaudham?

While registered cowshed committees will get the first preference, if they decline, the following can apply:

  • Farmer-Producer Companies
  • Cooperative societies
  • Trusts

Where Will They Be Set Up?

  • Rural areas located along major national highways in Chhattisgarh
  • Locations will be finalised based on proposals from district administrations
  • District-level committees will shortlist operators and send recommendations to the Chhattisgarh State Cow Service Commission for approval

How It Will Work

  • Proposal Submission: District administrations identify suitable locations and organisations.
  • Screening: The District committee will compare all applications.
  • Approval: Commission gives the green signal.
  • Agreement Signing: Selected organisation takes charge of Gaudham operations.

As per the official notification, the Gaudham Yojana is not just about cattle protection; it’s also a rural employment scheme that ties animal welfare with sustainable farming. This scheme will also curb the illegal smuggling of cattle, bring more security to livestock, and reduce criminal activities linked to the cattle trade.
